What Month Is Aries? Dates, Season & Cusp Guide

♈ What Month Is Aries?

Aries covers the end of March and most of April: March 21 to April 19 in the standard calendar. So Aries is not really a one-month sign. It straddles two, beginning within a day of the spring equinox and running until the Sun crosses into Taurus in the third week of April. If your birthday falls anywhere from March 21 through April 19, you were born under Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, ruled by Mars and carried by the symbol of the Ram.

The wrinkle worth knowing: those dates shift by a day depending on the year and your time zone. Anyone born March 19–21 or April 18–20 sits close enough to the boundary that only an exact birth chart settles it. Check your real Sun sign free in under a minute.

☉ The Exact Aries Dates

Ask ten astrology sites what month Aries is and you will get March 21 to April 19 from nearly all of them. That range is correct, and it is also a simplification. Here is what is actually happening in the sky.

Aries is defined by the Sun’s position, not by a calendar page. The sign begins the moment the Sun reaches 0° Aries, which is the same moment as the March equinox, and it ends when the Sun reaches 0° Taurus roughly thirty days later. Because the Earth’s orbit does not divide neatly into 365 whole days, that moment drifts around within a two-day window from year to year.

Why the dates are not fixed

Three things push the boundary around. The first is the leap-year cycle. A tropical year runs about 365.2422 days, so the equinox arrives roughly six hours later each year, creeping forward until a leap day yanks it back. Over a four-year stretch the Sun’s entry into Aries slides later, then jumps earlier again. That is why March 20 has become the more common start date in recent decades, with March 21 showing up less often than the textbooks suggest.

The second is your time zone. The Sun enters Aries at one instant for the whole planet, but that instant is stamped with a different local date depending on where you are. An ingress at 11:30 PM in New York is already 4:30 AM the next morning in London. Two babies born minutes apart on opposite sides of the world can end up with different Sun signs on paper.

The third is simply where you were born. Same principle, applied to your own birth certificate. This is why a printed date range can never be the final word for a cusp baby, and why an actual chart calculation is the only honest answer.

🌱 When Does Aries Season Start and End?

Aries season starts on the March equinox, usually March 20 and sometimes March 21, and ends around April 19 or 20. It lasts about thirty days, and it is the only zodiac season that opens on an astronomical event you can feel: the day light and dark come into balance and the Northern Hemisphere tips toward summer.

That timing is not decorative. Aries season is the stretch of the year when things start moving again after winter. Buds break. Days stretch. The whole hemisphere behaves like a sign ruled by Mars: restless, impatient, ready to go. If you have ever noticed that late March brings a peculiar itch to change something, whether that is the job or just the haircut, you have felt Aries season doing its work.

The exact sequence

The Sun leaves Pisces, the last and most dissolving sign of the zodiac, and enters Aries at 0°. That degree has a name astronomers still use: the First Point of Aries, the reference point from which celestial coordinates are measured. Thirty days later the Sun reaches the end of Aries at 29°, the notorious “anaretic degree,” and slides into the steady green pastures of Taurus.

Anyone with an Aries Sun has their birthday somewhere in that window. But Aries season affects everybody, regardless of sign, because the Sun is moving through Aries for all of us at once. Your Aries friends simply get a birthday out of it.

✦ Why Aries Opens the Zodiac

Here is a question people rarely think to ask: why does the zodiac start in March rather than January? The calendar year begins on January 1, so it would be tidy if Capricorn or Aquarius led the parade. They do not. Aries does.

The reason is that the zodiac is a seasonal wheel, not a calendar one. It is anchored to the equinoxes and solstices, and the natural starting point of that cycle is the moment when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north, which is the spring equinox. That is the instant life begins again in the hemisphere where Western astrology was developed. Assigning it to the sign of the Ram, ruled by Mars, made obvious sense to the people building the system: the first sign should be the one with the most raw initiating force in it.

This is why Aries carries the reputation it does. Being first is not just a position in a list; in astrological logic it is a job description. Aries is the spark before the strategy, the impulse before the plan. Its cardinal modality means it initiates its season rather than sustaining or ending it, and its fire element means it does so with heat rather than caution. Everything people say about Aries being impulsive, brave, competitive and self-starting traces back to where the sign sits on the wheel and what time of year it governs.

You can read the full personality picture that grows out of this in our guide to what Aries are known for, and the elemental logic behind it in is Aries a fire sign.

🌊 Born March 19, 20 or 21? Pisces or Aries?

If you were born between roughly March 18 and March 22, you cannot know your Sun sign from the date alone. This is the single most common confusion in the whole Aries date question, and it deserves a straight answer rather than the usual cusp mythology.

What a cusp actually is

Astrologically, there is no such thing as being “half Pisces, half Aries.” The Sun is either in Pisces or it is in Aries at the moment of your birth. There is no overlap, no blend, no shared custody. The Sun crosses from 29°59′ Pisces to 0°00′ Aries in an instant, and whichever side of that instant you arrived on is your sign, full stop.

What is true is that the popular date ranges are approximations, so people born near the boundary are genuinely uncertain until someone runs the numbers. That is a data problem, not a metaphysical one. Someone born March 20 in one year is a Pisces; someone born March 20 in a different year, or a different time zone, is an Aries.

Why cusp people often feel like both

There is a reason the cusp idea persists, and it is not nonsense. If you were born on March 20 with the Sun barely into Aries, there is a strong chance that Mercury or Venus, which never stray far from the Sun, were still back in Pisces. So you have an Aries Sun with a Pisces Mercury or Pisces Venus, and you genuinely do think or love like a Pisces while acting like an Aries. That is a real chart pattern with a real explanation, and it is far more interesting than a vague blend.

The only way to see it is to look at the actual placements. A date range will never show you a Pisces Venus sitting behind an Aries Sun.

🐂 Born April 18, 19 or 20? Aries or Taurus?

The same logic applies at the far end, and this boundary catches even more people out because April 19 and April 20 are both commonly printed as the last day of Aries depending on which source you read.

In most years the Sun leaves Aries on April 19 or April 20. If you were born on either of those dates, it is a coin flip until you check. April 18 is almost always Aries; April 21 is almost always Taurus; the two days between are the genuinely contested ground.

The felt difference between the two is stark, which is part of why people care so much. Aries is cardinal fire: fast, initiating, restless, happiest at the start of things. Taurus is fixed earth: deliberate, sensual, patient, happiest once something is established and comfortable. If you have spent your life reading Taurus descriptions and thinking “I am nothing like this, I cannot sit still,” you may well be a late Aries who was filed in the wrong drawer.

Late-degree Aries births carry an extra quirk. The last degree of any sign, 29°, has a reputation for urgency, a sense of having to get everything out of that sign before the door closes. Late Aries can feel like Aries turned up rather than Aries fading out. It is the opposite of what people expect from the “end” of a sign.

Once you know which side you landed on, the compatibility picture changes completely. Our breakdown of Aries and Taurus compatibility covers how these neighboring signs actually get along, which is a useful read either way.

🔱 The Three Decans of Aries

Thirty days is a long stretch to treat as one flavor, and traditional astrology never did. Each sign divides into three ten-degree segments called decans, and each decan takes on a secondary planetary influence. This is where “what month is Aries” gets genuinely useful, because it tells you something specific about your Aries birthday rather than Aries in general.

First decan: roughly March 21 – March 30

Ruled by Mars, doubling down on the sign’s own ruler. This is Aries at full strength: the most direct and most physically driven version of the sign. First-decan Aries tend to be the ones who genuinely enjoy confrontation, who move before they have finished thinking, and who recover from setbacks embarrassingly fast. Undiluted Ram energy. If you know an Aries who seems like a walking stereotype of the sign, check their birthday; there is a decent chance it lands here.

Second decan: roughly March 31 – April 9

Ruled by the Sun, borrowing from Leo. Warmth gets added to the fire. These Aries carry more natural charisma and a stronger need to be seen and appreciated than the first decan, whose motivation is more about winning than being admired. There is generosity here, a flair for performance, and a pride that can be wounded more easily than the classic Aries description allows for. Creative fields suit this decan well.

Third decan: roughly April 10 – April 19

Ruled by Jupiter, borrowing from Sagittarius. The most philosophical and the most wanderlust-driven Aries. Where the first decan wants to win the fight, the third decan wants to see what is over the next hill. Optimism runs high, restlessness runs higher, and there is often a lifelong pull toward travel, teaching, or some belief system worth arguing about. These are the Aries most likely to turn their impulsiveness into an adventure rather than a confrontation.

Decans are a layer, not a verdict. They color the Sun sign; they do not override the rest of a chart. But if you have ever wondered why two Aries born three weeks apart feel like different species, this is a large part of the answer.

🌗 March Aries vs April Aries

Because Aries spans two calendar months, people naturally sort themselves into “March Aries” and “April Aries,” and the distinction turns out to be more meaningful than you would expect, though not for the reason most people assume.

March Aries are early-degree Aries, which means the Sun has just arrived in the sign. Mercury and Venus are more likely to be trailing behind in Pisces, giving many March Aries a softer inner life than their outward behavior suggests. There is often an intuitive, dreamy or sensitive streak running underneath the drive. March Aries also tend to sit in that Mars-ruled first decan, so the outward presentation is bold while the private wiring can be surprisingly delicate.

April Aries are mid-to-late degree, further into the sign and closer to Taurus. Mercury and Venus are more likely to have caught up into Aries, or moved ahead into Taurus, which produces two distinct types: the all-in Aries with everything blazing in the same sign, or the Aries with a Taurus Venus who is fiery in action and stubbornly loyal in love. April Aries often read as slightly more grounded, slightly more patient, and slightly more interested in enjoying the results of their charge rather than just making it.

None of this is deterministic. It is a tendency, driven by orbital mechanics rather than mysticism: the inner planets can only be so far from the Sun, so your birth date genuinely constrains where they can be. That is the real, defensible reason a March Aries and an April Aries often feel different.

⚡ What Aries Season Feels Like If You’re Not an Aries

Aries season belongs to everyone. For the thirty days the Sun spends in Aries, it is lighting up whichever part of your chart Aries occupies, and the effect is fairly consistent across people: a return of appetite. Winter’s inwardness lifts. Patience shortens. The urge to begin something outruns the willingness to plan it properly.

You will notice it in the world too. Late March and early April are when gyms fill back up, when people quit jobs they have been tolerating since November, when arguments that were simmering politely finally get had. Mars is not subtle. The season rewards action and punishes dithering, and it has very little tolerance for anything half-hearted.

How to use it well

Start things. This is the single best month of the year for launching, and the single worst for finishing. If you have a project that has been waiting for the right moment, Aries season is the moment; if you have one that needs careful completion, it will probably be better served in Virgo or Capricorn season. Physical movement helps enormously. Aries energy that has nowhere to go turns into irritability with startling speed.

And go gently on the arguments. Cardinal fire makes everyone a little quicker to take offense and a little slower to consider whether the fight is worth having. The Aries in your life will have forgotten the row by dinner. Everyone else may not.

🎂 Your Aries Birthday Is a Solar Return

There is a technical name for what happens on your birthday, and it explains why the date matters beyond cake. Every year, the Sun returns to the exact degree and minute of Aries it occupied when you were born. Astrologers call that moment your solar return, and it is the start of your personal year.

The important detail is that it almost never lands on your birthday at the same clock time. If you were born at 3:12 PM, your solar return this year might occur at 9:40 PM the night before your birthday, or at 2:15 AM the morning after. It drifts by roughly six hours annually for the same reason the equinox does, then resets with the leap day.

Astrologers cast a chart for that precise instant, using the location where you are physically standing when it happens. That chart is read as a preview of the twelve months ahead: which house the Sun falls into, what the Rising sign is, where Mars and Jupiter have parked themselves. It is one of the oldest predictive techniques in the Western tradition and it remains one of the most practically useful.

Two things follow from this if you are an Aries. First, the “birthday slump” a lot of people report in the week before their birthday has a chart explanation: the Sun is finishing its circuit through your twelfth house, traditionally the most inward and depleting sector, right before it crosses into your first. Second, where you are on your birthday genuinely matters to the technique. Some astrologers travel deliberately to shift the Rising sign of their solar return chart. Whether you find that compelling or absurd, the fact that people take it seriously enough to book flights tells you something about how much weight the tradition puts on your exact birth moment.

Which loops back to the point running through this whole guide. March 21 to April 19 tells you the sign. Your specific degree, the thing only a real chart calculation can give you, is what makes the sign yours.

🔭 Why Some Sources Say Aries Is April 14 to May 14

If you have ever seen Aries dates that look nothing like March 21 to April 19, you were probably looking at a sidereal zodiac. This confuses a lot of people, so it deserves a real explanation rather than a brush-off.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons. 0° Aries is defined as the March equinox, wherever the stars happen to be. Vedic or Jyotish astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the actual constellations. Because of the slow wobble of the Earth’s axis (precession of the equinoxes, a roughly 26,000-year cycle), those two frameworks have drifted about 24 degrees apart over the last two millennia. In the sidereal system, Aries runs approximately April 14 to May 14.

Neither system is wrong; they are measuring different things. Tropical astrology measures the Sun’s relationship to the seasons. Sidereal astrology measures the Sun’s relationship to the fixed stars. If you are reading a Western horoscope, your dates are March 21 to April 19. If you are having a Vedic chart done in India, expect a different Sun sign and do not panic.

And the constellation is different again

A third layer of confusion: the actual constellation Aries, as drawn by the International Astronomical Union, does not occupy a neat thirty-degree slice of sky. Constellations are wildly uneven in size. The Sun passes in front of the constellation Aries for roughly a month in late April and May, and it also clips the corner of Ophiuchus at another point in the year, which is where the periodic “there is a thirteenth zodiac sign” headline comes from.

That headline resurfaces every few years and it misunderstands the system. Astrological signs are twelve equal 30-degree divisions of the ecliptic, named after constellations that once aligned with them. They were never meant to be the constellations themselves. Your Sun sign did not change. Nobody’s did.

💎 Aries Birthstones, Flowers and Birthday Notes

Because Aries spans two months, Aries babies get two sets of traditional birthstones, which is a small perk of the March–April split.

March birthstoneAquamarine and bloodstone
April birthstoneDiamond
Traditional Aries stoneDiamond, also red jasper and carnelian
Birth flower (March)Daffodil
Birth flower (April)Daisy and sweet pea
Aries colorsRed, scarlet, crimson
Aries metalIron
Ruling planetMars
Body rulershipHead and face

The symbolism lines up neatly with the sign. Iron is Mars’s metal and the metal of weapons and blood. Red is the color of Mars itself, the planet visibly rusty in the night sky. Bloodstone, green jasper flecked with red, is about as Aries an object as mineralogy produces. Even the body rulership fits: Aries governs the head, which is why the sign is associated with headaches, and why so many Aries have a scar somewhere above the eyebrows from moving faster than they were looking.

Diamond deserves a note of its own. It is the hardest natural substance on Earth, forged under extreme pressure, and it cuts everything else. As a symbol for cardinal fire it is almost too on the nose. If you are buying for an Aries and want something with real astrological logic behind it, red carnelian or a diamond will both land better than a generic zodiac pendant.

The full symbolic picture, including the Ram itself and the sign’s spirit animal associations, is covered in our guide to the Aries symbol, animal and colors.

🌟 Famous Aries Birthdays by Date

A quick tour through the Aries calendar, which doubles as a decent illustration of how the decans play out in public life.

Late March: the Mars decan

March 22: Reese Witherspoon. March 25: Elton John, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Jessica Parker. March 27: Mariah Carey, Quentin Tarantino. March 28: Lady Gaga. March 30: Vincent van Gogh, Céline Dion, Eric Clapton.

Look at that list and the Mars decan is hard to miss: enormous voices, uncompromising visions, careers built on refusing to do it the standard way. Van Gogh in particular is almost a case study in Aries pathology and Aries genius arriving in the same person.

Early April: the Sun decan

April 3: Eddie Murphy. April 4: Robert Downey Jr., Maya Angelou. April 5: Pharrell Williams. April 7: Jackie Chan, Francis Ford Coppola. April 9: Kristen Stewart.

The solar decan shows up as pure charisma and staying power. These are performers whose appeal is inseparable from their personality, and there are several spectacular comeback stories in the list. Downey’s career arc is about as second-decan Aries as it gets: fall hard, return brighter.

Mid-April: the Jupiter decan

April 15: Leonardo da Vinci, Emma Watson, Seth Rogen. April 16: Charlie Chaplin. April 17: Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Garner. April 18: Kourtney Kardashian.

Jupiter’s decan brings breadth. Da Vinci is the obvious headline: the definitive example of Aries restlessness pointed at everything at once, starting far more than he ever finished, which is the third decan’s great gift and its great flaw in one man.

One caveat, said plainly: a shared Sun sign explains very little on its own. These people have wildly different Moons, Risings and Mars placements, and those differences matter far more than the thirty days they have in common. Sun sign is the headline, not the article.

🌍 Do Aries Dates Change in the Southern Hemisphere?

No. If you were born in Sydney, Buenos Aires or Cape Town between March 21 and April 19, you are an Aries, exactly as you would be in London or New York. The dates do not flip, and there is no southern version of the zodiac that reshuffles the signs.

This question comes up constantly and it deserves better than a one-word answer, because the underlying logic is sound. The tropical zodiac is built on the seasons, and the seasons are reversed below the equator. If Aries is the sign of spring’s beginning, shouldn’t an Australian Aries really be a Libra, born as autumn arrives?

It is a fair objection, and a small minority of astrologers have argued exactly that. The overwhelming convention, though, is that signs are defined by the Sun’s measured position along the ecliptic, its celestial longitude, not by the weather outside your window. 0° Aries is the March equinox point for the entire planet simultaneously. Your latitude changes what that moment feels like; it does not change where the Sun is.

What genuinely does change is your Rising sign and your house placements, both of which are calculated from the horizon at your specific birth location. A birth in Melbourne and a birth in Munich at the same instant produce identical planetary positions and completely different charts, because the sky is oriented differently overhead. So the honest answer is that hemisphere matters enormously, just not to your Sun sign.

One last thought, and it is not a technical one. A Southern Hemisphere Aries is born into falling light rather than rising light, into harvest rather than first growth. Plenty of southern Aries describe feeling slightly out of step with the standard “spring, fresh starts, new beginnings” language attached to their sign, and that instinct is not wrong. The astrological machinery is the same; the lived experience of it simply arrives against a different backdrop.

🧭 Your Birth Month Is Only the First Answer

Everything above tells you which thirty-day window you were born into and what that window means. It is genuinely useful information, and it is also about ten percent of the picture.

Your Sun sign describes your core identity and vitality, the thing you are becoming over a lifetime. It says nothing about your emotional life, which is the Moon. Nothing about how you come across to strangers, which is the Rising sign. Nothing about how you argue, what you want in bed, how you handle money, or where your genuine talents sit. Those live in placements that a birth month cannot possibly reveal, because they depend on the exact hour and location of your birth.

This is why two Aries can be unrecognizable to one another. An Aries with a Cancer Moon and Virgo Rising is a careful, worried, meticulous person with a fire in the basement. An Aries with a Sagittarius Moon and Leo Rising is the walking billboard version everyone expects. Same Sun. Same birth month. Almost nothing else in common.

If the Aries descriptions you have read never quite fit, that mismatch is information rather than a reason to doubt the system. It usually means your Moon or Rising is doing the loudest work. The only way to find out is to look.

☿ Quick Answers

What month is Aries?
Aries spans two months, the end of March and most of April. The standard range is March 21 to April 19. Aries begins at the March equinox, which is why it is not confined to a single calendar month, and it ends when the Sun moves into Taurus in the third week of April.
When does Aries season start?
Aries season starts on the March equinox, which falls on March 20 in most years and occasionally March 21. It runs for about thirty days and ends around April 19 or 20. Because the equinox shifts slightly each year and lands on a different local date in different time zones, the exact start can move by a day.
What dates are Aries?
March 21 to April 19 is the standard Aries date range. In practice the true boundaries drift: the Sun can enter Aries as early as March 19 and leave as late as April 20 depending on the year and your birth location. Anyone born within two days of either boundary should check an actual birth chart rather than rely on the printed range.
Is April 20 Aries or Taurus?
It depends on the year and where you were born. April 20 is one of the two genuinely contested dates. In some years the Sun is still in Aries, in others it has already moved into Taurus. April 18 is almost always Aries and April 21 is almost always Taurus. For April 19 and 20, only a chart calculated for your exact birth time and place can settle it.
Is March 20 Pisces or Aries?
Either, depending on the year and time zone. March 20 is the most common date for the equinox in recent decades, so births on that date fall on both sides of the Pisces–Aries line. There is no “half Pisces, half Aries”; the Sun is in one sign or the other at the moment of birth. A birth chart names it to the exact degree.
What birthdays are Aries?
Every birthday from March 21 through April 19 falls under Aries, covering the last eleven days of March and the first nineteen of April. Late-March Aries sit in the Mars-ruled first decan, early-April Aries in the Sun-ruled second decan, and mid-April Aries in the Jupiter-ruled third decan, which gives each part of the range a slightly different character.
