Nobody puts these on a worst-match list, and that is exactly why they deserve a section. Cancer and Virgo sit 30° from Leo on either side — the semi-sextile, an aspect so minor most astrologers ignore it. Like the quincunx, adjacent signs share no element, no modality and no polarity. Unlike the quincunx, they are close enough to be constantly in each other’s field.

The neighbour problem

Adjacent signs have a peculiar relationship: each one contains the lesson the previous sign has just finished learning, or has not learned yet. Why sameness is not the same as ease

The aspects people call bad — squares and oppositions — are the aspects that show up most reliably in long relationships. Not the pleasant ones. The hard ones. The mechanism behind that

1. The Moons

Leo runs from roughly 23 July to 22 August, and those thirty-one days are not uniform. The sign divides into three decans of ten degrees each, and each decan carries a secondary ruler that shifts the temperament noticeably. If somebody put a gun to my head: Capricorn. Not Scorpio, which is what everyone expects.

Here is the reasoning. The Scorpio square is loud, and loud problems get addressed. Leo and Scorpio fight, and fighting is a form of engagement; the difficulty is right there on the table where two people can look at it. The Aquarius opposition is even more workable, because opposite signs share a pace and an axis, and because each one visibly has what the other lacks.

The Capricorn quincunx has none of that. There is no shared element, no shared modality, no natural bridge, and crucially no dramatic incident to point at.
