New Moon in Leo: Intentions & Fresh Starts

🌑 New Moon in Leo: What It Is and What It Starts

A new moon in Leo happens when the Sun and the Moon occupy the same degree of Leo at the same moment. That conjunction is the new moon, and because the Sun only passes through Leo once a year, roughly from 23 July to 22 August, a Leo new moon can only fall inside Leo season. Both lights, together, in the sign the Sun itself rules. It is the one moment each year when the lunar cycle restarts on Leo’s territory: creativity, visibility, romance, self-expression, and the specific kind of nerve it takes to be looked at.

That is the whole mechanism, and almost every article about this skips it and goes straight to candles. I would rather you understand what is physically happening first, because once you do, the advice stops being decorative and starts being usable. A new moon is not a mood the sky is broadcasting at you. It is a geometric event with a knowable position, and that position lands somewhere specific in your chart, in a house that has nothing to do with anybody else’s.

So this page does three jobs. It explains the astronomy and the astrology without hand-waving. It walks through what a Leo new moon activates for each of the twelve rising signs, house by house, which is the part readers actually need and hardly anybody bothers to write. And it deals with the two complications that change the advice completely: what happens when the new moon is close enough to a lunar node to become a solar eclipse, and what happens when it lands on top of one of your own natal planets. Run your free birth chart before you read the house section and you will know your rising sign, which is the only thing you need to make the rest of this personal.

♌ Your Sun Sign Is One Placement Out of Ten ♌

Knowing you’re a Leo tells you what your Sun is doing. Your Moon runs your emotional life, your Rising sign is what people meet before you say anything, and Venus and Mars decide how you love and how you fight. ☼ What Actually Happens in the Sky

The Moon goes around the Earth. The Earth goes around the Sun. From where we stand, the Moon appears to lap the Sun once every 29.5 days or so, and the moment it catches up and sits at the same zodiacal longitude, that is the new moon. Astronomers call the meeting a conjunction. Astrologers call it a lunation. Same event, different vocabulary.

Why you cannot see it

At the exact conjunction the Moon sits roughly between us and the Sun, so the half of it that is lit is the half pointed away from Earth. There is nothing to see. The sky where the Moon should be is simply dark, which is why the old name for this phase is the dark moon and why every tradition that noticed it attached beginnings to it. You are watching a body disappear and then come back as a thin crescent a day or two later. That is a very legible metaphor, and people have been using it for a very long time.

Why it lands in Leo

The Moon has to be in the same sign as the Sun to conjoin it, so the sign of any new moon is simply the sign the Sun is currently in. The Sun occupies Leo for about a month each year, so once a year the new moon happens on Leo ground and both lights sit together in the Lion. If you want the exact boundaries, the dates Leo actually covers shift by a day either side depending on the year, which is why a birthday on 22 August is not automatically Leo. Worth separating in your head, too: the sign is a thirty-degree slice of the ecliptic, while the constellation of the Lion is a pattern of actual stars that no longer lines up with it, a difference explained in the Leo symbol and constellation.

One detail almost nobody mentions: because the Sun moves slowest through the summer signs, it spends closer to thirty-one and a half days crossing Leo, while the lunar cycle runs about twenty-nine and a half. Which means that occasionally, when the first new moon of Leo season falls right at the sign’s opening degrees, a second one squeezes in before the Sun leaves. Two Leo new moons in one season. It is uncommon, it is not magic, and it is worth knowing so you do not assume your calendar is broken.

The Moon is a guest here

The Moon rules Cancer. At a Leo new moon it has just crossed out of its own sign and into the Sun’s, which means it holds no essential dignity of its own in Leo. It is borrowing the house of a host who is very much at home. The Sun ruling Leo is the single fact that shapes the whole flavour of this lunation: the reflective, private, need-based part of us is temporarily operating on the terms of the most public, self-declaring body in the chart.

In practice that produces a very particular feeling. Wants that are usually kept quiet get loud. The part of you that would normally settle for being appreciated in private starts wanting the room to know. This is not a flaw in the transit. It is the transit.

Where it sits in the wider cycle

The new moon opens a cycle that runs about four weeks. Seven days later the Moon squares the Sun at the first quarter, which is the friction point where whatever you started meets its first real obstacle. Two weeks after the Leo new moon the Moon is opposite the Sun in Aquarius, full, and that is when the thing you began becomes visible to other people, sometimes before you were ready. Then it winds down.

The Leo full moon is a different animal entirely and happens at the opposite end of the year, when the Sun is in Aquarius and the Moon is in Leo. Culmination rather than initiation, release rather than planting. If you have landed here looking for the emotional, everything-comes-to-a-head lunation, you want the full moon in Leo instead. The two are six months apart and they ask for opposite behaviour.

✦ A useful habit: note what you began at the Leo new moon, then look at your note when the Sun reaches Aquarius six months later. That is the same degree axis lighting up from the other side, and it tends to tell you honestly whether the seed took.

☆ Why the Leo One Is Different from the Other Eleven

Twelve new moons a year, one per sign, all doing the same mechanical thing. What separates them is the sign, and the sign changes what kind of beginning is being supported.

Fire, fixed, and ruled by the Sun

Leo is fire, so the impulse is outward and immediate rather than considered. Leo is fixed, so once something starts it wants to be sustained, defended and finished rather than endlessly revised. And Leo is ruled by the Sun, the only body in the chart that produces its own light instead of reflecting somebody else’s. Put those three together and you get the signature of this lunation: a beginning you are willing to put your name on.

Compare it to the neighbours. A Cancer new moon supports beginnings that need protection and privacy, the ones you keep quiet until they are strong. A Virgo new moon supports beginnings that need a system, a checklist, a workable routine. The Leo one supports the beginning you have to stand behind in public. If the thing you want to start would be easier if nobody ever knew it was yours, this is not the lunation that helps you. If the thing you want to start is being held back mainly by embarrassment, it is exactly the one.

The fifth house connection

Leo is associated with the fifth house, and the fifth house is one of the most misunderstood parts of the chart. It is not simply “fun”. It covers what you make that did not exist before you made it, which is why it holds creative work, children, romance in the courtship sense, performance, play, and gambling. Everything in that list is an act of putting something of yourself into the world and then finding out what happens. That is the emotional register of the Leo new moon even when it is landing in a completely different house of your chart. There is more on the domain itself in Leo and the fifth house.

Fixed fire has a downside

Honest note. Fixed signs do not pivot. An intention set with real conviction under a Leo new moon has a way of staying set long after the evidence has changed, because abandoning it starts to feel like a loss of face rather than a sensible edit. I have watched people carry a Leo-season commitment for a year purely because they announced it. Build a review date into whatever you begin. Not because the transit is untrustworthy, but because pride is a poor project manager. That particular failure mode sits near the top of Leo’s less flattering traits, and it is worth knowing about in advance rather than discovering in March.

☉ The Degree, the Decan, and Why They Matter

“New moon in Leo” is not precise enough to be useful on its own. Leo is thirty degrees wide, and a new moon at 2° Leo and a new moon at 28° Leo will do noticeably different things to the same chart. The degree is the piece of information that turns a generic forecast into something you can act on, and it takes ten seconds to look up.

What the degree tells you

Two things. First, whether the lunation is aspecting anything in your own chart, which is the subject of a whole section further down and is the single biggest variable. Second, if you use a house system other than whole sign, the degree decides which house it falls in when Leo straddles a cusp. Under whole sign houses, Leo is one house and that is that. Under Placidus, which is what most free chart software defaults to, a new moon at 4° Leo and one at 26° Leo can genuinely land in two different houses for the same person. If your Leo house cusp falls in the middle of the sign, check the degree before you decide which department of life is being activated.

The three decans

Each sign divides into three ten-degree decans, and in Leo each one has a different sub-ruler. This is old technique and it is unusually informative here.

0°–9° LeoSun-ruled decan, roughly 23 July to 1 August. The purest version. Beginnings about identity, authorship and simply being willing to be seen doing the thing.
10°–19° LeoJupiter-ruled decan, roughly 2 to 11 August. Expansion, teaching, publishing, faith in the idea. Generous, sometimes overcommitted. Good for anything that needs scale or an audience.
20°–29° LeoMars-ruled decan, roughly 12 to 22 August. Competitive, physical, impatient. Good for beginnings that require nerve, confrontation or actual exertion rather than planning.

A new moon in the Mars decan is a different instruction from one in the Jupiter decan. The first says go and do the difficult thing you have been avoiding. The second says say yes to the bigger version. Full detail on how the three thirds of the sign behave is in the Leo decans guide, and it is worth reading if you want to stop treating the sign as one undifferentiated block.

Anaretic and early degrees

Traditional practice pays attention to the last degree of a sign, the twenty-ninth, sometimes called anaretic. A new moon there carries a slight sense of a deadline, of a chapter closing while it opens. And a new moon at 0° or 1° Leo has the opposite quality: unformed, wide open, the beginning of a beginning. Neither is a verdict. Both are worth noticing.

✨ What It Is Genuinely Good For

Here is where I will be more opinionated than most pages you will read on this. A Leo new moon is not a universal green light. It is good at some things and actively unhelpful for others, and knowing the difference is worth more than any ritual.

Beginnings it supports well

Creative work you intend to show somebody. Not the private notebook. The thing that gets published, posted, performed, submitted, hung on a wall. Leo does not really recognise creative work that stays hidden as creative work at all, which is unfair, but it is how the energy behaves.

Visibility. Applying for the role with your name on the door. Putting your face on the business instead of hiding behind a logo. Speaking at the thing. Starting the channel. Anything where the obstacle is not competence but exposure. If the wanting-to-be-seen part makes you uncomfortable, why Leo actually wants attention is a more generous account of that drive than the one you have probably absorbed.

Romance in its courtship phase. First dates, asking, making the move, the declaration. Leo is not the sign of quiet long-term maintenance; that is Cancer’s job, and Virgo’s. Leo is very good at the part where somebody has to be brave first. If that is your particular blockage, this is a genuinely useful few days, and the Leo love language will tell you what happens next, once the brave part is over.

Self-expression that has been rationed. Dressing the way you want. Saying the opinion out loud. Dropping the flattened, agreeable version of your voice you use at work. Small, and it changes more than people expect.

Courage. The plain kind. Making the phone call. Naming the number. Saying no to the thing you have been saying yes to for two years.

Beginnings it does not support

Anything that requires you to be small, patient, invisible or self-effacing is fighting the current. Detox routines, budget austerity, quiet withdrawal, cutting people off, minimalist purges, anything where the whole point is subtraction. A new moon is additive by nature and this one is additive and loud. If your plan is to disappear for a month and come back changed, wait for a Virgo or Capricorn lunation and you will have an easier time of it.

Also worth saying: this is a poor moment for decisions that hinge on being talked out of something. Fixed fire does not take counsel well. If you have a choice that genuinely needs a second opinion, get the second opinion before the new moon, not after.

✦ The honest test. Ask whether the thing you want to start is currently blocked by not knowing how or by not wanting to be seen trying. Only the second one is this lunation’s department.

If nothing in your life is asking for this

Then do nothing. Genuinely. Not every transit is an assignment, and there is a strain of astrology content that treats every lunation as a homework deadline, which is exhausting and slightly dishonest. Some years the Leo new moon lands in a quiet corner of your chart, touches nothing, and passes without incident. Recognising those years is a skill. It is also why the house section below matters more than the sign.

✦ ♌ ✦

🏠 Finding the House It Lands In

This is the part that makes the difference between reading a horoscope and reading your chart. The sign of a lunation is the same for everybody alive. The house is yours alone, and the house is what tells you which department of your life is being handed a fresh start.

Use your rising sign, not your Sun sign

Houses are counted from the Ascendant, the degree of the zodiac that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. That is why birth time matters and why two people born the same day in the same city can have this new moon in completely different parts of their lives. If you do not know your rising sign, generate your free birth chart and it takes about a minute. There is a fuller explanation of what the Ascendant actually is in what Leo rising means, and the distinction between the three headline placements is covered in Leo Sun, Moon and Rising.

Plenty of sites will tell you to read by Sun sign instead. That gives you what astrologers call solar houses, and it is a reasonable fallback if your birth time is genuinely unknown. It is a fallback. It is not the same thing, and you should not build a decision on it if you can get the real chart instead.

The mapping

Under whole sign houses, which is the cleanest way to do this, you count from your rising sign as the first house and Leo lands wherever it lands.

Aries rising5th house — creativity, romance, children, play
Taurus rising4th house — home, family, roots, the private self
Gemini rising3rd house — writing, speech, siblings, the local world
Cancer rising2nd house — money, possessions, self-worth
Leo rising1st house — body, identity, appearance, the self
Virgo rising12th house — solitude, the unconscious, what is behind the scenes
Libra rising11th house — friendships, networks, the future you want
Scorpio rising10th house — career, reputation, public standing
Sagittarius rising9th house — study, travel, publishing, belief
Capricorn rising8th house — shared money, intimacy, debt, what is hidden
Aquarius rising7th house — partnership, marriage, one-to-one dealings
Pisces rising6th house — work routine, health, service, animals

One caveat about house systems

If your chart uses Placidus, Koch or another quadrant system, Leo may be split across two houses, or it may be intercepted, sitting entirely inside one house without ruling either cusp. In that case take the degree of the new moon and see which side of the cusp it falls on. When the two systems disagree, read both and see which description matches your actual life. That sounds like a cop-out. It is the standard working method, and any astrologer who tells you otherwise is selling certainty they do not have.

🔥 Aries, Leo and Sagittarius Rising

Aries rising: the fifth house

Leo is your fifth house, and its ruler, the Sun, is the planet in charge of that whole department for you. This is the most on-brand version of a Leo new moon anybody gets. Creative output, romance in its early giddy stage, children, performance, sport, the calculated risk taken for the pleasure of taking it.

What it looks like in practice: you finally start the thing you have been describing to people for eight months. You ask somebody out instead of leaving the message half-written. You sign up for the class, the league, the open mic. Aries rising tends not to lack nerve, so the obstacle here is usually not fear but scatter, the fourteen half-started projects that all felt urgent at the time. Pick one. Fixed fire rewards the person who picks one.

Romance-wise, this is a courtship window rather than a commitment window, and treating it as the second thing is how Aries risings end up three weeks into something they had not thought about. If the romantic thread is the live one for you, Venus in Leo covers how this particular flavour of attraction actually behaves once the first fortnight is over, and Leo first date ideas is a more practical place to start than a list of restaurants.

The caution: the fifth house also rules gambling, and I mean that literally as well as figuratively. Enthusiasm plus fire plus a fresh cycle is a combination that can talk you into stakes you would not normally take. Enjoy the risk-taking in the creative department. Be duller with money.

Leo rising: the first house

The new moon lands on your own sign, in your own first house, which is about as personal as a lunation gets. The first house is your body, your face, your name, the version of you that walks into a room. This is a reset of the self, not of a project.

Once a year, close to your rising sign’s territory, you get a legitimate opportunity to change the terms of how you present. People do this instinctively and then feel silly about it, so let me defend it: cutting your hair, changing how you dress, starting to train, adopting a new name, updating the photograph that has been on every profile since 2016. These are first house acts and they are not vanity. They are declarations that something inside has changed and you would like the outside to match. There is a whole piece on that impulse at the Leo glow-up.

The subtler version is behavioural. You stop performing the smaller, easier version of yourself in the meeting. You let people see that you actually care about the work rather than pretending it is no big deal. Leo rising is often carrying a gap between the confident exterior and a much less certain interior, and this lunation is a good moment to close it a little rather than paint over it.

The caution: a first house new moon can tip into making the self the project, permanently. Six weeks of self-optimisation is a reset. Six months is a hiding place.

Sagittarius rising: the ninth house

Leo is your ninth house, so this new moon is about the enlargement of your world: study, long journeys, publishing, teaching, law, religion, and the beliefs you actually live by rather than the ones you would list on a form.

Concretely, this is the year’s good moment to enrol in the course, book the flight you have been pricing, pitch the book, start the newsletter, apply for the thing abroad, or begin learning the language properly instead of on an app for four days. Ninth house beginnings have a quality of departure to them. Something in your current frame has stopped being big enough and the fix is not effort but range.

Because Jupiter is the natural ruler of this house, the risk is scale before substance. You commit to the three-year degree in the first flush of the idea. You promise the audience a weekly episode. Jupiter in Leo is worth reading here precisely because it shows what that overpromising looks like when it is running unchecked.

The caution: ninth house enthusiasm is genuine and short-lived unless it is attached to a schedule. Set the first three sessions in the calendar before the crescent moon shows up, or the whole thing stays a lovely idea you had in August.

🌲 Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn Rising

Taurus rising: the fourth house

Leo sits at the base of your chart, in the fourth house: home, family, property, ancestry, and the private self nobody at work has met. A new moon here is a beginning that happens indoors.

The literal versions are moving, buying, renovating, or finally making the flat look like somebody who likes their own life lives in it. The Leo flavour matters. This is not a decluttering transit. It is the one where you paint the wall the colour you actually want, hang the thing you were told was too much, and stop treating your home as a waiting room for a better future home. Fourth house Leo wants the private space to have some warmth and some theatre in it.

The family versions are heavier and often more useful. Starting the conversation with a parent that you have been circling for years. Deciding to host again. Taking up the role at the centre of the family instead of at the edge of it, or setting it down. If you have children, or want them, the fourth house carries that too, alongside the fifth. How Leo parents is a fair sketch of the warmth and the pressure that come as a pair here.

The caution: pride at the root of the chart makes it hard to admit the house is not working. Taurus rising will redecorate around a problem for a year rather than say the arrangement itself is wrong.

Virgo rising: the twelfth house

This is the awkward one, and I would rather say so than dress it up. Leo is your twelfth house: solitude, sleep, the unconscious, hospitals and institutions, what happens behind the scenes, and everything you do that nobody sees. A new moon about visibility, landing in the house of the invisible.

So the instruction is genuinely different for you. This is not your year to launch. It is your year to begin something in private and let it stay private for a while. Start the draft nobody reads. Begin therapy. Start the practice, the retreat, the recovery, the sabbatical, the quiet research that has no audience yet. Twelfth house beginnings mature underground and resent being dug up to check on them.

There is often an emotional component too. The twelfth is where we store what we have not processed, and a Leo lunation there can push up something about being unseen, unrecognised, or applauded for the wrong thing. That is not a malfunction. It is the material, and Leo and vulnerability is the closest thing on this site to a manual for it. If solitude is your natural setting, whether Leo actually likes being alone is a useful counterweight, because Leo does the twelfth house very differently from how Virgo rising expects to.

The caution: do not force a launch to prove the transit is working. Eleven months from now, when the Sun crosses your Ascendant, the thing you started quietly will be ready to show. That is the design.

Capricorn rising: the eighth house

Leo is your eighth house, which covers other people’s money, shared resources, debt, inheritance, tax, and the kind of intimacy that involves genuine exposure rather than pleasant company. Beginnings here are rarely comfortable and are often extremely practical.

The financial version: opening the joint account, applying for the loan, restructuring the debt, dealing with the will, negotiating the salary, asking the investor. Note that all of these involve asking somebody else for access to something of theirs, which is exactly the eighth house, and which is exactly what Capricorn rising hates doing. The Leo new moon supplies the nerve for one conversation. Use it on the one that has been sitting there longest.

The intimate version: saying the thing you have not said in the relationship. Not the affectionate thing, the exposing one. The eighth house is where you find out whether being fully known survives contact. Leo and trust gets at why pride makes that particular disclosure so expensive.

The caution: the eighth house is where fixed signs dig in hardest. If a negotiation here turns into a standoff, notice that you are now defending a position rather than pursuing an outcome, and that the two stopped being the same thing several days ago.

Virgo, Capricorn, Taurus: the shared problem

Earth risings tend to translate every transit into a task, which is efficient and slightly misses the point. The Leo new moon does not want a plan. It wants a commitment made out loud, with your name attached, before the plan is finished. That is genuinely uncomfortable if your Ascendant is earth. Do it anyway, once, in the smallest available version, and watch what it changes.

🌬 Gemini, Libra and Aquarius Rising

Gemini rising: the third house

Leo is your third house: speech, writing, short journeys, siblings, neighbours, and the ordinary daily traffic of information. A new moon here is a beginning made of words.

Start the newsletter. Pitch the column. Record the first episode. Send the message to your brother that you have been drafting since spring. Take the course that teaches you a skill in six weeks rather than three years. Third house beginnings are small, near, and repeatable, and their power is entirely in the repetition rather than the launch.

The Leo part changes the register. Third house Leo does not want neutral, informative prose. It wants a voice with a person clearly behind it. If you have been writing anonymously, in the corporate register, hedged and polite, this is the lunation for putting your name on it and letting the opinions show. Mercury in Leo describes that speaking style well: warm, declarative, a bit theatrical, and allergic to mealy-mouthed qualification.

The caution: Gemini rising can start four communication projects at once and finish none. Leo’s fixity is actually your friend here. One channel. One voice. Twelve weeks.

Libra rising: the eleventh house

Leo is your eleventh house: friendships, groups, networks, communities, alliances, and the future you are hoping for. This is a sociable, forward-leaning placement for a new moon and it is easy to underrate.

What it starts: a friendship, sometimes very suddenly. Joining the group, the club, the collective, the professional body. Being the one who organises rather than the one who gets invited. Deciding what you actually want the next five years to contain, which is an eleventh house question rather than a tenth house one, because it is about hopes rather than achievements.

Leo in the eleventh has a specific texture: you want to be a distinct person inside the group rather than an interchangeable member of it. That is not arrogance, it is the placement, and Libra rising sometimes suppresses it in the name of getting along. Stop suppressing it for a few weeks and see what happens. Leo as a friend is a fair account of that loyal, generous, slightly high-maintenance mode of friendship, and Leo and social media covers what the same instinct does once it goes public.

The caution: eleventh house Leo can attach its self-worth to the group’s reception. If the collective does not respond in the first week, that is data about the collective, not a verdict on you.

Aquarius rising: the seventh house

Leo is your seventh house, which means Leo is on your Descendant, and this new moon lands squarely in the department of partnership: marriage, business partners, close one-to-one dealings, and open opposition.

This is the most relational version of the transit anybody gets. It starts partnerships. Meeting someone. Making it official. Signing with the collaborator, the agent, the co-founder. Also, honestly, the other kind of seventh house event: the confrontation with the person on the other side of the table, which the seventh house has always covered alongside marriage, because they are structurally the same thing. Somebody who is not you, dealt with directly.

The Leo Descendant tells you something permanent about your wiring, not just about this month. You are drawn to warmth, confidence and presence in a partner, and you tend to find yourself opposite people who take up more room than you do. The Leo Descendant unpacks that pattern properly, and it is one of the more useful things an Aquarius rising can read about themselves.

The caution: a seventh house new moon can make you feel that the missing piece is a person. Sometimes it is. Often it is a quality you have outsourced to whoever seems to have it. Ask which one before you commit to anything with a signature on it.

Air risings and the thinking problem

All three of you will be tempted to analyse this lunation rather than use it. The Leo new moon does not respond to analysis. It responds to a specific, slightly embarrassing act performed in front of at least one other human being. Pick the act. Write it down. Do it inside seventy-two hours.

🌊 Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces Rising

Cancer rising: the second house

Leo is your second house: income, possessions, resources, and the sense of worth underneath all of it. Note that this is your money, earned and held by you, as distinct from the shared money of the eighth.

Beginnings here are unglamorous and genuinely valuable. Asking for the raise. Naming a higher rate to a new client. Starting the side income. Opening the account that the money actually goes into. Buying the one expensive thing that will last twenty years instead of the four cheap ones. Leo in the second has a particular relationship with quality: it would rather own less and love it than own a lot of adequate objects. The wider picture of earning and ambition sits in Leo, money and career.

The self-worth thread underneath is the real work. Second house Leo ties what you earn to what you believe you are worth, and that link is not metaphorical, it shows up in the number you say out loud when somebody asks your price. If you consistently underquote, this lunation is the annual invitation to stop. How Leo handles money covers both sides of that: the generosity and the expensive gesture that arrives at exactly the wrong moment in the month.

The caution: a Leo second house new moon can be spent rather than invested. The dopamine of the purchase arrives instantly. The raise takes six weeks. Do the slow one first.

Scorpio rising: the tenth house

Leo crowns your chart. It is your tenth house, the most public sector of the wheel, covering career, reputation, professional standing and whatever you are known for by people who have never met you.

Of the twelve, this is the most straightforwardly ambitious version of the transit, and it is the one I would least like to see wasted. It starts the new role, the promotion campaign, the business, the public-facing project, the application. If you are still deciding what the role should be, the work Leo does best is a useful shortlist. It is also good for the quieter tenth house move of deciding what you want to be known for, which most people never explicitly decide and then wonder why their reputation drifted.

Leo at the midheaven wants recognition attached to the work by name. Scorpio rising, by temperament, would rather have the power without the profile. Those two are in tension in you permanently, and this lunation asks you to lean visible for once. A Leo Midheaven explains what that public signature looks like when it is working properly.

The caution: tenth house new moons are noticed. Whatever you begin here, other people will have an opinion about it, quickly. Decide in advance whether you want their input or merely their applause, because you will get both.

Pisces rising: the sixth house

Leo is your sixth house: daily work, routine, health, the body’s maintenance, colleagues, service, and animals. The least dramatic house on the wheel, receiving the most dramatic lunation.

What that produces is a beginning inside ordinary life. Starting the job rather than the career. Building the routine that actually holds. Beginning training, physiotherapy, a real sleep schedule, the practice you do at the same time every day. Leo in the sixth wants the daily to have some dignity in it, which is a genuine thing and not a trivial one: it is why you would rather do good work in a job nobody rates than mediocre work in an impressive one.

Health is squarely in scope. The Leo body rules the heart, the spine and the upper back, so the sixth house version tends to be about posture, stamina, cardiovascular work and the physical consequences of carrying too much. Leo and the body goes into that properly. Start the boring, repeatable thing. Repetition is the whole point of the house.

The caution: Pisces rising tends to serve first and notice the cost later. A sixth house new moon is a good moment to add one routine and remove one obligation, in the same week, deliberately.

Water risings and the absorption problem

All three of you read the room before you read yourself, and a Leo lunation asks for the opposite order. For the length of this cycle, notice what you want first, out loud, before you have checked whether it will inconvenience anybody. It will feel rude. It will not be.

✦ ♌ ✦

📜 Intention-Setting, Done Sensibly

I am not going to tell you the sky grants wishes. I am also not going to tell you the ritual is pointless, because I have watched it work often enough to take it seriously, and there is a perfectly ordinary explanation for why.

Why writing things down at a lunation actually helps

Three unremarkable mechanisms. Writing a want in a specific sentence forces you to decide what you actually mean, and most wants collapse or clarify under that pressure. Attaching it to a dated event gives you a natural review point four weeks and six months later, which is more structure than most goals ever get. And doing it deliberately, at a marked moment, makes you likelier to act in the days that follow, which is the part that does the real work.

None of that requires the Moon to be doing anything to you. But the calendar of lunations is a genuinely good rhythm to hang the practice on, and the sign gives each one a theme so you are not starting from a blank page twelve times a year. If you want the fuller Leo-flavoured version of this practice, Leo and manifestation goes deeper on the mindset side.

Timing: how much precision is warranted

The conventional advice is to set intentions in the hours after the exact conjunction rather than before it, on the logic that the days before a new moon belong to the old cycle, the balsamic phase, which is for winding down rather than starting. I think that convention is sound and I follow it. I also think the panic about missing the window is nonsense. A day either side is fine. The first three days after are comfortably within the spirit of the thing, and if you are away, ill or busy on the day, do it when you can. A practice you actually keep beats a perfectly timed one you resent.

Two refinements worth knowing. If you want to be exact, the new moon happens at a specific clock time in your own timezone, which is why calendars in different countries sometimes show different dates for the same event. And if the Moon goes void of course shortly after the conjunction, meaning it makes no further major aspects before leaving Leo, traditional practice would wait for it to enter Virgo before starting anything with a hard commitment attached. That is a fine detail and I mention it for completeness, not because it should stop you.

The rules that make intentions worth writing

Write about your own behaviour, not other people’s. “I will send three pitches a week” is an intention. “They will finally notice me” is a hope with somebody else’s name on it, and it hands the outcome to a person who has not agreed to it.

Make it falsifiable. If you cannot tell, at the full moon, whether you did it, it was not specific enough. “Be more confident” fails this test. “Speak first in every meeting this month” passes it.

Keep it to three, and be honest that one of them is the real one. People write eleven intentions and act on none. Three is the practical maximum, and there is almost always one that made your stomach drop slightly when you wrote it. That one.

Match the theme to the sign. You can set any intention you like at any lunation, but you get a following wind when the intention fits the sign. At a Leo new moon, put the visibility item, the creative item and the courage item at the top. Save the decluttering for Virgo.

Attach one action inside forty-eight hours. This is the rule that separates the people it works for from the people it does not. Not the whole project. One irreversible-ish step: the email sent, the deposit paid, the message actually delivered, the first page written and shown to one person.

✦ A ritual is a container for a decision. If no decision goes in, the container is just a nice evening with a candle. Which is fine, but do not expect the calendar to do the deciding for you.

What the ritual can look like

Keep it plain unless elaborate genuinely helps you. Somewhere quiet, phone face down, twenty minutes. Write the three sentences by hand, present tense or future tense, whichever stops you hedging. Read them aloud once, which feels ridiculous and is the single most Leo-appropriate step in the whole process, since this is the sign that requires things be said out loud to count. Note the date. Put the paper somewhere you will find it in four weeks.

Candles are traditional here and unusually apt, given the Sun rules Leo, though the fire is decoration rather than mechanism. If you like the ceremony, have the ceremony. If it makes you cringe, skip it entirely and keep the writing. The writing is the part that does something.

One addition I would recommend to almost anyone: put something restorative in the same evening. Not as decoration, but because a lunation about visibility tends to be followed by a day or two of feeling slightly overexposed, and Leo-style self-care is unusually good at handling exactly that.

✍ What to Actually Write Down

Abstract advice about intentions is easy to agree with and impossible to use, so here is the concrete version. Three examples, each one shown badly first and then rewritten.

Example one: the creative intention

Weak: “I want to be more creative this year.” Nothing to do tomorrow, nothing to check in a month.

Strong: “I finish the first four songs and play them for two people whose taste I respect before the full moon.” It names the output, it names the exposure, and the exposure is the Leo part. A creative intention with no audience clause in it is a Virgo intention wearing a Leo costume.

Example two: the visibility intention

Weak: “I want more recognition at work.” Depends entirely on other people, gives you nothing to do, and quietly builds resentment when it does not happen.

Strong: “I put my name on the report instead of the team inbox, and I present it myself.” Small, specific, slightly uncomfortable, entirely within your control. The recognition, if it comes, is the consequence rather than the goal.

Example three: the romantic intention

Weak: “I want to meet someone.” Nearly everyone writing intentions has written this. It has never once been an instruction.

Strong: “I ask out the person I have been talking to, by Friday, in plain words, and I accept whichever answer I get.” The last clause matters more than it looks. Fixed fire finds rejection humiliating rather than informative, and building the acceptance into the sentence in advance takes some of the sting out of it. If you want a sense of how this sign approaches the asking, the way a Leo flirts is a decent map of the confident-then-suddenly-shy pattern.

The one you are avoiding

Here is the exercise that gets results. Write the three intentions you are comfortable with. Then write, underneath, the sentence you did not want to put on the list. The one about the person you have not contacted, the work you have been calling a hobby to protect yourself, the number you have never had the nerve to say out loud. Under a Leo new moon, that fourth sentence is almost always the one with the actual charge in it. You do not have to act on it. Write it down anyway and notice how differently it reads in four weeks.

🌕 When the New Moon Is a Solar Eclipse

Some years the Leo new moon is an ordinary lunation. Some years it is a solar eclipse, and that changes the advice more than any other single factor on this page. Here is how to tell the difference and what to do about it.

The mechanism, again without hand-waving

The Moon’s orbit is tilted about five degrees against the plane of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Because of that tilt, at most new moons the Moon passes a little above or a little below the solar disc from our point of view, and nothing dramatic happens. The two points where the Moon’s path crosses the ecliptic are the lunar nodes, north and south, always exactly opposite each other.

If a new moon happens while the Sun and Moon are close to one of those crossing points, the alignment is tight enough for the Moon to cover the Sun. That is a solar eclipse. Within roughly eighteen degrees of a node, a partial eclipse becomes possible. Within about eleven or twelve, you get a central eclipse, total or annular depending on how far away the Moon happens to be in its slightly elliptical orbit. Annular is the one where the Moon is too small in the sky to cover the disc completely and leaves a ring of light around the edge.

How often Leo gets one

The nodes drift backwards through the zodiac and take a bit over eighteen and a half years to complete a circuit, spending around eighteen months in each pair of opposite signs. So eclipses in Leo arrive when the nodal axis is running along Leo and Aquarius, they cluster inside that year-and-a-half window, and then they do not happen again for the best part of two decades.

Which means the practical question is simply: are the nodes currently in Leo and Aquarius? If they are not, your Leo new moon is a normal lunation and the eclipse section does not apply to you this year. If they are, everything below does. Any chart calculation will show you the current node positions, and the Leo north node explains what that axis is about in the first place.

Why an eclipse asks for different behaviour

A regular new moon is an invitation. You choose something, you begin it, you steer it. An eclipse behaves less like an invitation and more like a plot device. In practice, eclipse periods tend to bring events that arrive with their own timing: the offer, the ending, the resignation, the message, the piece of information that reorganises the picture. Astrologers have noticed this pattern for a very long time and the language around it is consistent across traditions that otherwise disagree about everything.

So the working advice inverts. Do not force a launch on an eclipse. Do not make an irreversible commitment in the forty-eight hours around it if you can reasonably wait a fortnight. Write down what is happening rather than what you want. And give it time: things set in motion around an eclipse have a habit of only making sense several weeks later, once the second event, the one that explains the first, has turned up.

North node or south node

Convention holds that an eclipse near the north node leans towards intake, growth and the unfamiliar, while one near the south node leans towards release, endings and something being handed back. I use that distinction and find it useful. I would not build a life decision on it alone. It is a lean, not a law.

The folklore worth deflating

You will read that an eclipse is three times stronger than a normal new moon, that its effects last exactly six months, and that you must not manifest, cut your hair, sign anything or leave the house. Some of this descends from genuine tradition, including a very old technique that judged the duration of an eclipse’s influence from how many hours it lasted in the sky. Most of it is internet accretion, repeated because it makes good copy.

What I would actually say: an eclipse in Leo is worth watching for the six weeks around it, is worth taking much more seriously if it lands within a couple of degrees of one of your own planets or angles, and is worth largely ignoring if it does not touch your chart at all. That last part is the bit nobody wants to hear, and it is the most useful sentence in this section.

✦ One test that sorts the noise from the signal: find the eclipse degree, then look for anything in your natal chart within three degrees of it, in any sign. Something there means this one is yours. Nothing there means you are watching somebody else’s weather.

☊ When It Lands on Your Natal Planets

This is the difference between a Leo new moon you barely notice and one you remember for years. The lunation happens at a specific degree. Your natal chart has planets at specific degrees. When those degrees line up, the transit stops being general weather and starts being about you.

How close is close enough

For a lunation contacting a natal point, work with a tight orb. Within one degree is loud. Within two is clearly noticeable. Three is the outer edge where I would still take it seriously, and anything wider than that is background. Some astrologers stretch orbs much further. In my experience the tight ones are where the observable events cluster, and the wide ones are where wishful thinking creeps in.

The aspects that matter, and where the natal planet has to be sitting for each: conjunction means the planet is in Leo at nearly the same degree. Opposition means it is in Aquarius. Square means Taurus or Scorpio. Trine means Aries or Sagittarius. Sextile means Gemini or Libra. You can check this in thirty seconds once you have your chart in front of you.

Conjunctions: the new moon sitting on something of yours

On your natal Sun. If you are a Leo with the Sun at that degree, this falls within days of your birthday and functions as an annual reset of identity on top of your solar return. Unusually potent, unusually personal. The year that follows tends to have a theme you can name. More on that placement in the Sun in Leo.

On your natal Moon. A lunar return coinciding with the new moon. Emotional weather turns sharp and legible; you know exactly how you feel about something you had been vague about for months. If you have a Leo Moon, expect the need to be appreciated to become impossible to keep politely quiet.

On your natal Mercury. Words. You write the thing, send the thing, say the thing. Conversations that have been stuck for months move in a single afternoon.

On your natal Venus. Romance and money, in the courtship and pleasure register rather than the commitment one. Attractions start here. So do purchases you will defend for a decade.

On your natal Mars. Action, and temper. This is the conjunction most likely to produce an argument you did not plan and a piece of decisiveness you had been putting off, sometimes within the same twenty-four hours. Mars in Leo is worth reading for the specific way this one fights: theatrically, then generously.

On your natal Jupiter. The most comfortable of the set. Opportunity, scale, optimism, a yes arriving. The risk is overcommitment rather than obstruction.

On your natal Saturn. A beginning that comes with weight attached: a commitment, a responsibility, a structure, a hard conversation about what you can realistically sustain. Not a bad transit, a serious one. Things started here take longer and last longer. Saturn in Leo covers the particular strain between duty and the desire to be admired.

On your natal Ascendant or Midheaven. The angles are as sensitive as the planets. On the Ascendant, this reads as a visible personal reset. On the Midheaven, as a professional one, often public. If your birth time is uncertain by more than a few minutes, treat any angle contact with suspicion, because the angles move roughly a degree every four minutes.

On your natal Uranus, Neptune or Pluto. The outer planets crossed Leo in long generational sweeps, Neptune early in the twentieth century, Pluto around its middle, Uranus shortly after, so whether you have one here is mostly an accident of when you were born. The contact is still real: Uranus brings the abrupt and unplanned, Neptune blurs and inspires in equal measure, Pluto goes at whatever you have been unwilling to look at. These are slower and less event-shaped than the personal planet contacts.

On your natal nodes. Fated-feeling, in the sense that the circumstances tend to arrive rather than be chosen. Worth a note in the journal even if nothing obvious happens that week.

The harder angles

Opposition, from planets in Aquarius. Something has to be balanced rather than chosen. The Leo impulse to lead with your own preference meets a person, a group or an obligation pulling the other way. Aquarius holds the collective, Leo holds the individual, and the opposition asks the same question every time: can you be fully yourself without treating everyone else as an audience?

Square, from planets in Taurus or Scorpio. The most productive of the difficult aspects, because a square is friction rather than blockage. Fixed square fixed means two things that both refuse to move. Something you have decided runs into something you value or something you have invested in. It forces an edit you would not have made voluntarily.

Trine, from Aries or Sagittarius. Easy, warm, and mildly forgettable. Fire trine fire supports whatever you begin without demanding anything, which also means it will not stop you doing something silly with great confidence.

Sextile, from Gemini or Libra. Opportunity that requires you to reach for it. A conversation, an introduction, a door left slightly ajar. Sextiles do nothing at all if you ignore them.

If it aspects nothing

Most years, for most people, the Leo new moon makes no close aspect to anything natal. That is normal and it is not a failure of the transit or of you. In those years the house placement is the whole story: the department of life gets a mild seasonal refresh, you can use it if it is convenient, and if you forget entirely, nothing is lost. An astrology that insists every lunation is significant for everybody is an astrology that has stopped being able to tell you anything.

✦ Work it out once and keep the note. Write down which house Leo occupies for you and any natal planets sitting between 0° and 29° Leo, with their degrees. That single line of information makes every future Leo lunation readable in about a minute. Pull your free chart and copy the numbers down.

☽ Born on a Leo New Moon

Some people arrive here not because of a transit but because they were born under one. If your birth chart has the Sun and Moon within a few degrees of each other in Leo, you are a new moon baby, and it is a real and describable condition rather than a piece of trivia.

What the conjunction does to a personality

The Sun is what you are consciously aiming at. The Moon is what you actually need. In most charts those two sit in different signs and houses, which is why so much of life is spent negotiating between the version of yourself you are trying to be and the version that needs feeding. With the two conjunct, that negotiation largely does not happen. Will and need point the same way.

The upside is a kind of wholeness that other people find striking. You are not at war with yourself. When you want something, all of you wants it, and that produces a momentum that is very hard to argue with. In Leo specifically it produces warmth without much hedging: you like what you like, out loud, and you do not much mind who knows.

The cost is perspective. The Moon usually acts as a second vantage point on the Sun, and when it is sitting in the Sun’s lap there is no second vantage point. New moon people can be startlingly unaware of how they land. Not unkind, just unable to see themselves from outside without deliberate effort and honest friends. In Leo that shows up as a genuine confusion about why anybody would find the self-assurance overwhelming, since from the inside it feels like nothing more than being yourself. If the sign itself is new to you, what a Leo actually is covers the ground plainly. The whole Sun, Moon and Rising interaction is unpacked in Leo Sun, Moon and Rising, and it is the fastest way to see whether your Rising sign softens this or amplifies it.

Beginnings suit you

People born at the dark of the Moon tend to be starters. First to move, comfortable with a blank page, energised by the thing that does not exist yet, and noticeably less interested once it is running smoothly. If you have a history of launching well and maintaining badly, that is not a character flaw to be scolded out of you. Build the maintenance into the plan by handing it to somebody else, or by making the running of it a new project with a new name.

Not the same as having a Leo Moon

Worth separating, because search engines mash them together. Having the Moon in Leo means your emotional nature is Leo-flavoured, whatever your Sun is doing. Being born at a Leo new moon means your Sun and Moon are both in Leo, at almost the same degree. The second includes the first. The first is far more common and does not carry the conjunction’s particular blend of certainty and blind spot.

🚫 Timing Rules and Myths You Can Ignore

A short list of things you will be told about new moons that are either overstated or simply invented. I would rather you spend your attention on the parts that work.

“You have to do it in the exact hour”

No. The conjunction is instantaneous, the useful window is a day or two after it, and treating the timing as a test you can fail turns a helpful practice into a small source of anxiety. If you like precision, use it. If precision makes you avoid the practice entirely, drop it.

“A black moon is powerful”

A black moon usually means the second new moon inside one calendar month. Calendar months are an administrative convention with no astronomical standing, so a second new moon within one is a filing coincidence rather than a celestial event. The Leo season equivalent, two new moons while the Sun crosses Leo, is at least a real astronomical fact, and even that is a scheduling quirk rather than an intensifier.

“A super new moon is stronger”

The Moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle, so a new moon that happens near perigee is genuinely a little closer to us. It also cannot be seen, since it is a new moon. The tidal effect is measurable. The astrological effect is not something I would promise anybody.

“Everybody feels it”

Plenty of people notice nothing whatsoever, and that is not a spiritual deficiency. Whether a lunation registers depends almost entirely on whether it is touching your chart, which is why the aspects section above exists and why generic new moon advice feels so hit and miss.

“Never start anything during Mercury retrograde or a void Moon”

Traditional electional astrology does take both into account, and if you are choosing a moment for a wedding or a launch, so should you. For writing three sentences about what you want to do with your autumn, the caution is wildly out of proportion to the stakes. Consider the fine print when the decision is expensive and irreversible. Otherwise, get on with it.

“The new moon in Leo means the same for everyone”

The thing this whole page has been arguing against. Same sign for all of us, different house for each of us, and different aspects again. A forecast that does not ask for your rising sign is telling you about the sky, not about you, which is the whole argument in how a Leo horoscope is actually built. If you want the general seasonal picture as well, Leo season covers the month as a whole, and when Leo season starts explains why the dates move.

🕐 The Four Weeks Afterwards

The new moon is the opening of a cycle, not the whole of it, and the rest of the cycle is where the useful information is. Here is the shape of it, with what to do at each stage.

Days one to three: act

The intention and the first action should sit close together. This is where the practice lives or dies, and the action can be genuinely small as long as it is real and involves at least one other person knowing about it.

Around day seven: the first quarter square

The Moon reaches ninety degrees from the Sun, which puts it in Scorpio while the Sun is still in Leo. Fixed square fixed. This is the first proper obstacle, and it usually arrives as resistance rather than disaster: the person who does not reply, the doubt at three in the morning, the practical detail you had not thought about. Squares are not verdicts. Push, and adjust the method rather than the goal.

Around day fourteen: the full moon in Aquarius

Opposite the sign you began in. Whatever you started becomes visible, and other people get a vote. The Aquarian angle asks the awkward question: does this thing serve anyone besides you? Sometimes the answer is that it does not need to. Sometimes the answer arrives as a piece of feedback you had not asked for and did not enjoy. Either way, this is the halfway checkpoint, and it is the moment to reread what you wrote a fortnight earlier.

Around day twenty-two: the last quarter

The Moon reaches Taurus, squaring the Sun from the other side. Time to edit. Cut whatever you added out of enthusiasm and have not touched since. Honest self-assessment is the skill here, and Leo’s strengths and weaknesses is a fair mirror to hold up while you do it. This is the stage almost everybody skips, and it is the one that decides whether the next cycle starts clean or carries baggage.

The next new moon, and the one after

Four weeks later the cycle restarts in Virgo, which is a natural moment to convert whatever survived into a routine rather than a burst of inspiration. Six months later the Sun reaches Aquarius and the full moon lands in Leo, on the same stretch of zodiac you planted in, which is when Leo seeds tend to be judged. Twelve months later the Leo new moon comes back around, and if you have kept the notes you now have a year-on-year record of what you commit to and what you actually complete. That record is worth more than any single forecast. If you want to nail down the smaller windows within the month, Leo lucky days covers the recurring timings inside the cycle.

☿ Quick Answers

What does the new moon in Leo mean?
A new moon in Leo means the Sun and the Moon are conjunct at the same degree of Leo. It happens once a year, during Leo season, and opens a fresh four-week lunar cycle on Leo’s territory: creativity, visibility, romance, self-expression and courage. What it actually starts for you depends on which house Leo occupies in your birth chart, which is decided by your rising sign.
What should I do during a new moon in Leo?
Write down two or three specific intentions about things you have been avoiding because they require being seen, then take one real action within forty-eight hours. It suits creative work you intend to show people, applications, first moves in romance, and anything blocked by exposure rather than by skill. It suits withdrawal, decluttering and quiet austerity much less well.
When is the new moon in Leo?
Once a year, at some point while the Sun is crossing Leo, which runs roughly from 23 July to 22 August. The exact date and time shift each year and depend on your timezone, so check a current lunar calendar. Very occasionally two new moons fall inside one Leo season, because Leo takes the Sun slightly longer to cross than the 29.5-day lunar cycle.
Is the new moon in Leo a solar eclipse?
Only when it falls close to one of the lunar nodes, which happens while the nodal axis is running through Leo and Aquarius. The nodes take a little over eighteen and a half years to circle the zodiac and spend about eighteen months in each pair of signs, so Leo eclipses cluster in a window and then do not recur for the best part of two decades. In every other year it is an ordinary new moon.
Which house does the new moon in Leo fall in for me?
Count from your rising sign as the first house. Aries rising gets it in the fifth, Taurus rising the fourth, Gemini rising the third, Cancer rising the second, Leo rising the first, Virgo rising the twelfth, Libra rising the eleventh, Scorpio rising the tenth, Sagittarius rising the ninth, Capricorn rising the eighth, Aquarius rising the seventh and Pisces rising the sixth. The house tells you which area of life is getting the fresh start.
Can you set intentions during a Leo new moon eclipse?
You can write them, but hold them loosely. Eclipses tend to deliver events on their own timing rather than respond to being steered, so most astrologers advise observing rather than launching, and waiting a couple of weeks before making anything irreversible. If the eclipse degree is more than three degrees away from every planet and angle in your own chart, it is unlikely to be your story at all.
