♐ What Animal Is Sagittarius? Symbol, Birthstone and Colors
What animal is Sagittarius? The centaur: half human, half horse, drawing a bow. It is the only sign in the zodiac represented by a hybrid creature that is deliberately half animal and half person, and that detail is the whole meaning. The horse half is instinct and physical drive. The human half is aim and understanding. Sagittarius is what happens when the animal decides where to point.
If you want the single-word answer for a form or a quiz, say horse, or say centaur if there is room. If you want the symbol rather than the animal, it is the Archer, and the glyph is ♐, a plain arrow with a crossbar.
Everything else attached to Sagittarius follows from that image: turquoise as the birthstone, purple as the colour, the hips and thighs as the body part it governs, and a constellation that happens to sit in the most crowded and interesting part of the entire night sky. All of it is below, along with a note about which Greek myth is actually behind it, because the popular answer is probably the wrong one. 🐎 The Centaur, and Why the Hybrid Matters
Look at how the other signs are represented. A ram. A bull. A crab. A lion. A scorpion. Fish. Straightforward creatures, each carrying one clear quality. Then three exceptions: Gemini’s twins, Virgo’s maiden, Libra’s scales. And Sagittarius, which is the only sign that is half animal on purpose.
That construction does specific work. A centaur has a horse’s body, meaning power, speed, appetite and the ability to cover ground. It has a human torso, arms and head, meaning intention, judgement and the capacity to aim. And it is holding a drawn bow, which is the moment the two halves cooperate: raw animal force being pointed at a distant target by a mind that chose the target.
What that says about the sign
Sagittarius is the sign of instinct given direction. Not restrained instinct, which would be Capricorn’s project, and not pure instinct, which is closer to Aries. Directed instinct. The energy is not tamed, it is aimed.
Which is also why the sign fails in a very particular way. If the human half loses interest, you have a horse running somewhere for no reason. Sagittarian restlessness is exactly that: the drive still going, the aim gone missing.
The arrow points up
In almost every historical depiction the archer is aiming upward, not level and not down. It is a small detail with a lot of meaning packed into it. The target is higher than where the archer stands, which is as good a summary of Jupiter’s expansive optimism as you could ask for, and it explains why the same sign produces travellers, students, lawyers and preachers.
♐ The Symbol and the Glyph
Two different questions that get asked as though they were one.
The symbol of Sagittarius is the Archer, the centaur with the bow. That is the pictorial representation you see on charts, tattoos and jewellery.
The glyph is ♐, the shorthand mark astrologers actually write. It is an arrow pointing diagonally upward with a short line crossing the shaft. The arrow is the aim and the ascent. The crossbar is usually read as the bow, or as the earthly plane the arrow is leaving behind, which is a nicely Sagittarian idea: something being crossed on the way out.
Of all twelve glyphs it is the most literal and the easiest to draw from memory. The name helps too. Sagittarius is Latin for archer, from sagitta, an arrow.
| Symbol | The Archer, a centaur drawing a bow |
| Glyph | ♐ an upward arrow with a crossbar |
| Animal | The centaur, so horse for the animal half |
| Name origin | Latin sagittarius, archer, from sagitta, arrow |
| Ruling planet | Jupiter |
| Element | Fire, mutable |
| Birthstone | Turquoise, with topaz and zircon also traditional |
| Colours | Purple and royal blue, sometimes orange |
| Metal | Tin, following Jupiter |
| Body | Hips, thighs, sacrum, sciatic nerve, and the liver |
| Tarot card | Temperance |

🦅 What Is the Sagittarius Spirit Animal?
The most searched version of this question, and it needs an honest preface before the answer.
“Spirit animal” is not a traditional astrological concept. It does not appear in Ptolemy, in medieval Arabic astrology, or in any of the classical sources. The term itself comes from Indigenous North American spiritual traditions where it carries specific religious meaning, and its use in horoscope content is a modern borrowing. Worth knowing, and worth being a little careful with.
What astrology genuinely gives Sagittarius is the centaur, and therefore the horse. If you want a defensible answer to the spirit animal question, that is it.
The other animals commonly assigned, and why
The horse
The strongest answer. It is literally half the sign. Freedom, stamina, the refusal to be broken, the need to run. Every Sagittarian trait maps onto a horse without stretching.
The owl
Assigned for the wisdom-seeking side, the philosopher rather than the traveller. Reasonable as a metaphor, no traditional basis.
The eagle
For the high vantage point and the long view, matching the upward arrow. Note that the eagle is more traditionally associated with Scorpio in the fixed-sign symbolism.
The deer or stag
For alertness and speed. Popular in modern lists, entirely modern.
What I would actually say
Take the horse and leave the rest. It is the one with an actual claim, it is in the symbol, and it tells you something true: a creature built to cover distance, willing to carry you, and impossible to keep in a small enclosure without damage.
🏹 The Greek Myth, Corrected
Almost every article on this subject tells you Sagittarius is Chiron, the wise centaur who tutored Achilles and Asclepius. It is a lovely story and it is probably the wrong constellation.
What the older sources say
The classical accounts of the constellation Sagittarius, including those preserved through Eratosthenes and Hyginus, more often identify it with Crotus, a son of Pan who lived among the Muses on Mount Helicon. He was a hunter credited with inventing archery, and the Muses asked Zeus to place him in the stars as thanks for his company and his applause. That is the figure the ancient writers attach to this particular patch of sky.
Chiron, meanwhile, is usually assigned to Centaurus, a separate and larger constellation further south. Two celestial centaurs, two different figures, and the popular sources have merged them.
Why the confusion persists
Chiron is a far better story. He was the wounded healer, immortal, teacher of heroes, killed by an accidental poisoned arrow and finally released from endless pain. That is irresistible material, and it fits the Sagittarian themes of teaching and philosophy so neatly that nobody checks.
There is also a naming coincidence doing damage: the astronomical body Chiron, discovered in 1977 and named after the centaur, is used by some modern astrologers as the wounded healer. People see “Chiron,” see “centaur,” see “Sagittarius,” and assemble a connection that the classical sources do not support.
What to take from it
Crotus is genuinely more interesting for understanding the sign, once you look. A satyr who invented archery, lived with the Muses, and was honoured for his enthusiasm. Aim, art, and unembarrassed enjoyment. That is closer to what Sagittarius actually behaves like than the tragic healer version, and the traits it produces are laid out in what are Sagittarius known for.
💎 The Sagittarius Birthstone
The traditional zodiac birthstone for Sagittarius is turquoise. That is the answer to give if someone asks for one stone.
It gets more complicated because Sagittarius straddles two calendar months, and modern birthstone lists are organised by month rather than by sign. So a Sagittarius has a legitimate claim on two sets.
| Zodiac birthstone | Turquoise, the traditional stone assigned to the sign itself |
| Also traditional for the sign | Topaz, especially blue topaz, and zircon |
| November birth month | Topaz and citrine |
| December birth month | Turquoise, zircon and tanzanite |
| Colour of the birthstone | Turquoise is a blue to blue-green opaque stone. Blue topaz ranges from pale sky to deep London blue. |
| Jupiter’s stone | Amethyst and lapis lazuli are often given for Jupiter itself, both purple or deep blue |
Why turquoise, specifically
Turquoise has been a travellers’ stone across many cultures for thousands of years, carried for protection on journeys and, in several traditions, fixed to horse harness to guard both rider and animal. Amulets of turquoise appear in Persian, Egyptian and Native American traditions, frequently connected to safe passage.
For the sign of long journeys, on horseback, that is about as apt as symbolic correspondence gets. Whether or not you think a stone can protect anyone, the association was not arbitrary.
Other stones commonly recommended
Amethyst for the philosophical and Jupiterian side, lapis lazuli for truth and wisdom, sodalite and blue sapphire for clear thinking, and citrine for the optimism. These are modern crystal-tradition recommendations rather than classical astrology, and I would treat them as pleasant rather than binding. Buy the stone you like the look of.
🎨 Sagittarius Colours
The classical answer is purple, and it comes directly from Jupiter rather than from the sign.
Purple was the most expensive dye in the ancient Mediterranean, extracted in tiny quantities from murex sea snails, and it was restricted by law in Rome to the highest ranks. It became the colour of kings and of Jove himself. Jupiter is the planet of authority, abundance and expansion, so purple came with the rulership.
| Primary colour | Purple and violet, from Jupiter |
| Secondary | Royal blue and deep indigo, also Jupiterian |
| Fire-sign colours | Orange, warm yellow and gold, from the element rather than the planet |
| Less commonly given | Maroon and deep red, borrowed from the Mars flavour of the sign’s second decan |
| Turquoise | Included by association with the birthstone |
Which to actually use
If you are picking a colour for something Sagittarian, purple is the defensible choice and orange is the intuitive one. Purple carries the planet and the tradition. Orange carries the temperament, which is warm, loud and not remotely subtle.
Nobody should choose a wall colour on this basis, but for a gift, a logo or a birthday card it is a sound shortcut.
🦵 What Body Part Does Sagittarius Rule?
In medical astrology, each sign governs a region of the body, running from Aries at the head down to Pisces at the feet. Sagittarius, as the ninth sign, takes the hips and thighs.
| Primary | Hips, thighs and the femur |
| Also assigned | The sacrum, the pelvis, and the sciatic nerve |
| Via Jupiter | The liver, and traditionally the processing of excess |
| Associated complaints | Sciatica, hip and thigh strain, and injuries from doing something enthusiastically without warming up |
Why the hips and thighs
Two reasons that reinforce each other. Anatomically the sequence puts the ninth sign at the upper leg. Symbolically the thighs are the powerhouse of the horse and the seat of a rider, the part of the body that carries you distance. For the sign of the journey, that placement writes itself.
The liver connection comes through Jupiter, the largest planet governing the largest internal organ, and the traditional association of the liver with abundance, richness and the metabolising of too much of a good thing. Old astrological medicine was often built on this kind of resemblance.
The necessary caveat
This is symbolism and history, not medicine. Sign-to-body correspondences have no diagnostic value, and nothing here should influence a decision about your health. If your hip hurts, see a doctor, not a chart.
🔭 The Constellation, and Where to Find It
Here the sign gets genuinely lucky, because the constellation Sagittarius occupies the single most spectacular region of sky available to us.
Where it is
Sagittarius is a large southern constellation, best seen from the northern hemisphere low in the south during July and August, and much higher and easier from southern latitudes. It sits next to Scorpius, and if you can find the curved tail of the scorpion you are looking in the right place.
The Teapot
Nobody looking at the sky has ever seen a centaur there. What people actually see is the Teapot, an asterism of eight bright stars forming a recognisable pot with a handle, a lid and a spout. Once you have seen the Teapot you cannot unsee it, and it is by far the most practical way to identify the constellation.
Its brightest stars
The brightest is Kaus Australis, also called Epsilon Sagittarii, at around magnitude 1.8, marking the southern part of the archer’s bow. The name comes from Arabic and Latin roughly meaning the southern part of the bow. Second is Nunki, or Sigma Sagittarii, one of the oldest surviving star names in use, of Babylonian origin.
As for how many stars the constellation contains: it depends entirely on where you draw the line. The Teapot uses eight. The traditional figure of the archer is usually drawn with about a dozen. Roughly sixty-five stars in the constellation’s borders are bright enough to see with the unaided eye from a dark site, and a telescope will show you many thousands.
Why this patch of sky is so crowded
Because you are looking straight into the middle of our galaxy. The centre of the Milky Way lies in the direction of Sagittarius, which is why the constellation is packed with nebulae and star clusters: the Lagoon Nebula, the Trifid Nebula and the great globular cluster M22 are all here. On a genuinely dark night the Milky Way is at its thickest and brightest through this region.
It is also the direction of Sagittarius A star, the supermassive black hole at the galactic centre. That object shares the constellation’s name and has nothing whatever to do with the zodiac sign, your birthday or your horoscope. It is a piece of astronomy that happens to fall behind the same figure, and it is worth saying plainly because the names get tangled constantly.

🌿 Flowers, Metal, Tarot and the Rest
The remaining correspondences, with a note on where each comes from so you can weigh it yourself.
Metal: tin
From the classical planet-to-metal scheme, where each of the seven visible planets took a metal. Jupiter received tin, and the sign inherits it. Old, consistent, and about as meaningful as you want it to be.
Tarot: Temperance
In the standard correspondence used by most modern tarot systems, Sagittarius is matched to Temperance, the fourteenth trump. The card usually shows a figure blending liquid between two vessels, and the fit is about the measured combination of two natures, which is the centaur’s whole problem.
Flowers: carnation, crocus and dandelion
Modern floral lists rather than classical astrology. The dandelion is the most Sagittarian of the three if you think about it: it travels on the wind, it grows anywhere, and nobody can contain it.
Trees: oak, and traditionally the fig
Jupiter’s trees in the old herbals, chosen for size, longevity and generous fruiting.
Day of the week: Thursday
Jupiter’s day, still visible in the French jeudi and Spanish jueves. The rulership behind it is explained in what planet rules Sagittarius.
⚖️ How Much of This Is Worth Anything
A fair question, and I would rather answer it than sell you a crystal.
These correspondences fall into three groups, and they do not deserve equal weight.
Structurally meaningful
The symbol, the glyph, the element, the ruling planet. These are load-bearing. The centaur with the bow genuinely tells you what the sign does, and Jupiter’s rulership genuinely predicts the traits. If you understand the archer and the planet, you can derive most of Sagittarius yourself.
Historically interesting
Turquoise, purple, tin, Thursday, the hips and thighs, Temperance. These are old, stable, culturally rich and worth knowing. They are also decorative rather than predictive, and no serious astrologer reads a chart from them.
Modern decoration
Spirit animals, flower lists, most crystal recommendations. Invented recently, no tradition behind them, and no mechanism. Enjoy them if you like them, and do not build anything on them.
The useful hierarchy is simple: the symbol tells you about the sign, the sign tells you a little about a person, and the chart tells you about the person. Each step is a large increase in specificity, and most of what circulates online never gets past step one.
