In the traditional seven-planet scheme, Jupiter has two homes: Sagittarius by day and Pisces by night, following the old distinction between diurnal and nocturnal signs. Both are Jupiter’s, and both are mutable, which is not a coincidence.

The claims you will occasionally see

A handful of writers have proposed Chiron as a Sagittarian co-ruler, on the grounds that Chiron is named after a centaur and Sagittarius is a centaur. It is a pun rather than an argument. Chiron is a small body between Saturn and Uranus, most commonly read as the wounded healer and associated more with Virgo or Pisces where anybody assigns it at all. It has no established Sagittarian rulership.

You may also see claims involving asteroids or hypothetical planets. None of these have any standing in either traditional or mainstream modern practice.

The English word jovial is the neatest piece of evidence that this symbolism is old and stable. People have described a certain kind of large, warm, generous temperament as Jupiter-like for long enough that the planet’s name became the adjective for it. 🚫 Four Common Mix-Ups

1. “What planet does Sagittarius rule?”

A very common phrasing, and it has the relationship backwards. Signs do not rule planets. Planets rule signs. Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and Sagittarius rules nothing, though it does govern the ninth house and, in medical astrology, the hips and thighs.

2. Jupiter versus Neptune

Both are associated with faith and belief, so they get confused. Jupiter’s faith is structured: doctrine, philosophy, law, a framework you can argue for. Neptune’s is boundaryless: mysticism, dissolution, the thing that cannot be stated. Sagittarius belongs to the first kind.

3. Mars, because of the arrow

The bow and arrow look martial, so people guess Mars. Mars rules Aries and, traditionally, Scorpio. Sagittarius does have a Mars-flavoured stretch in its second decan, which is where some of this impression comes from, but the sign’s ruler is Jupiter throughout.
